To “See the Spots and Sink the Shots” is the key principle — and the quick result — of using this training aid.

The skill and the visual acuity that a player develops is very important in the aiming process when shooting pool. If a player thinks through this process on every cut shot at the pool table, they will consistently make those shots. They will win games, and their confidence at the table will grow.

Before I found the CutShots website I had to admit there were simple cut shots I wasn’t making that I should have made a lot more often. Since then, they have really helped my game. In the last APA Tournament, I was able to win 4 out of 5 matches, which is my best.

Because shooting pool is a muscle memory type activity, I’ve found that the Cutshots balls can develop this muscle memory for me — or any player — to shoot in a proper and consistent way, right in the beginning, lining up a shot and making it.

Regulation pool balls are balls that are designed to be the standard size for the American version of Pool. Those pool balls are used on a standard regulation pool table that has pockets that are sized for the balls. The standard size for regulation pool balls is 2 ¼ inches or 2.25 inches.

Sometimes, people will refer to pool balls as billiard balls. Billiards has been used as another name for the game of Pool; however, Billiards may also refer to the English version of the cue sport. English Billiards uses a different version of the ball that is bigger than a pool ball. The game of English Billiards uses only three-ball colors, and the rules of the game are different than American Pool.

Regulation English Billiards balls are 2 7/16 inches or 2.44 inches in size. Billiards is different than Pool, and the objectives are not the same.

Numerous companies develop different Pool training balls for the game of Pool. The pool training ball systems that are out there mostly use one or two balls that help players aim shots. In this article, we review some of those products and how they work.

The main training balls that are sold for the game of Pool and what some people call Billiards are the Jim Rempe Training Billiards ball, the Aiming by the Numbers system, and the CutShots aim training system (our product).

Jim Rempe Pool Training Cue Ball

The Jim Rempe training ball is a cue ball that has a graphical design showing the locations players need to hit to make certain types of shots. The ball was developed by Jim Rempe, a professional pool player, and is geared toward teaching players how to put a spin on the ball. The ball comes with a 56-page manual that helps players learn the different ways to hit the ball for certain spins. Sidespin, topspin, backspin, and other cue ball control methods are covered.

One area that is not fully covered with the Jim Rempe Pool training ball is the actual aiming of the ball into the pocket. Since the cue ball does not cover that area, it is good for learning how to incorporate advanced playing techniques into your game. English, draw, and other spin methods can be learned with the ball.

The Jim Rempe Pool/Billiards Training Ball

The billiards training ball is made by Aramith, the world’s leading manufacturer of training balls. All of the balls covered here are Aramith manufactured balls. Aramith’s pool balls are considered to be the best quality pool balls on the market.

Aiming by The Numbers Pool Aim Training System

Aiming by The Numbers is a two-ball pool training system that is manufactured by Aramith. The set contains a cue ball and an object ball. The pool balls have numbers that are placed on the equator and are used to help line up shots. Included with the set is a 64-page manual that teaches players how to use the system. In addition, table cards with the numbers on them, and pocket guides are included.

The Aiming by the Numbers system is a good way to learn how to aim shots; however, it can become complicated due to the learning curve that is required to understand the system.

CutShots Pool Training Ball

The CutShots aim training system is a newer product that is manufactured by Aramith also. It uses the CutShots Method which is a new and easy way to aim shots. All players have to do is spot, spot, shift, and then shoot. A concept called equal and opposite is used, which allows pool players to use three easy steps to make any cut shot.

The CutShots system comes with a training cue ball and one or more object balls. The balls have a patented pattern on them that helps players see the spots that need to be hit. Pool and billiards players simply find the spot that would sink the object ball into the pocket, if it were hit directly with the cue. The player then moves to the cue ball and finds the spot that is on the opposite side (mirror image). From that spot, the player then shifts to the center of the cue and takes the shot. The result is that the ball will be hit at the right angle that will sink the shots. The shapes on the ball help pool players to remember the location of the spots. See the spots, sink the shots. It’s that simple.

CutShots is the simplest training pool ball system on the market. You don’t need multi-page manuals to understand how to master the method. Most players can be up and running in 15 minutes. To learn more about how CutShots works, visit our learning page.

The Jim Rempe training ball, Aiming by the Numbers pool training system, and the CutShots Pool Aim Training system are the main pool/billiard training balls available. Jim Rempe and the Aiming by the Numbers sets come with a manual that is 56 to 64 pages long. CutShots, on the other hand, has a simple instruction booklet and can be learned with our 7-minute video.

The game of Billiards is an interesting indoor sport that anyone can play. Billiards can refer to the American game of Pool or English Billiards. One of the main differences between the two is that the size of the balls are different. The U.S. version of pool is the most popular version of the sport.

For both of the games, the main skill that players need to be good is shooting. Shooting Billiards is an important skill because players need to be able to make shots at many different positions on the table. Cut shots are the majority of shots that need to be made in pool. Making shots is easier said than done. Some players will just use a trial and error method to learn how to hit the cue ball at the right angle to pocket the object balls. Other players will use an aiming method that will help them line up their shot at the right angle. Some of those methods include the CutShots Method, the Ghost Ball, Method, Center to Edge, and Fractional Aiming.

The CutShots Shooting Method

In Billiards, a good way to develop accuracy in making billiards shots is to use a method that will help you develop consistency when aiming. The CutShots Method is a new and revolutionary shooting method that helps Billiard players find the right spots to hit on the object ball and the cue ball. The method was developed by Bill Herbert after years of having trouble making cut shots.

The method uses a geometric concept called equal and opposite to help players find the right locations to hit on the Billiard balls.

An image of a person shooting Billiards on a table using the CutShots Method and balls
Above is a person shooting Billiards on a table using the CutShots Method and training balls.

How it Works

Players line up with the spot (spot 1) that would sink the object ball into the pocket by directly hitting the ball on the equator. While remembering the location of that spot, players then move to the cue ball and line up in the position that is pointed in the direction of the object ball. The Billiard player then moves to the location that is directly opposite (mirror image/spot 2) from spot 1 while looking at the object ball from the cue ball. The player then lines up with spot 2 and then shifts to the center of the cue. From the center of the cue, the player takes the shot. The result is that the object ball will be hit at the correct angle and it will enter the pocket.

CutShots has developed an innovative training billiard ball that helps players learn the method and become better at Billiards quickly. You can learn more about the method and the billiard aim training balls on this page.

Ghost Ball Method

The Ghost Ball method is one of the popular methods that pool players use to aim shots. The method is fairly easy to use as it just involves players visualizing an invisible ball directly behind the object ball in the direction that would sink the ball into the pocket. A person then just has to aim toward the ghost ball and the object ball will be hit at the angle that will sink it into the pocket. The method is easy to understand; however, it is a little hard to get used to on a billiards table. A player has to visualize an imaginary ball that is behind the object ball, which can be hard to do. One way to help with the “visualization” is to put the cue an inch or two behind the object ball and then pivot the cue toward the cue ball. The player then moves the cue back to the cue ball and takes the shot. The only issue with this method is that you could lose the angle during the transition to the cue ball. Also, you are still aiming the cue toward the ghost ball, which you can’t see.

The Ghost Ball method is simple to understand; however, when putting it into play it can be easy to make errors in lining up with the ghost ball.

In comparison, the CutShots Method does not have a ghost ball to hit and all of the spots can be easily visualized. Other methods like Center to Edge and the Fractional methods also do not have a ghost ball that needs to be hit.

The Ghost Ball Method Overview for Pool and Billiards
This is a graphic showcasing how the ghost ball method works for Billiards

Center to Edge Aiming Method

The Center to Edge method is an interesting way to aim shots in Billiards. Center to Edge is a simple method on the surface; however, it is more complicated once you start learning more about the method. Players start at the cue ball and aim their cue toward the edge of the object ball (the edge that they need to hit). The cue is then pivoted toward the center of the cue ball and the shot is taken. The method is simple; however, when players start learning more about the system, it starts to become complex. The cue ball can be split into three spots that players start at to make a shot. A player then selects the appropriate spot that is closest to the edge of the object ball. In some versions of the method, there are 5 spots that can be aimed toward. Since players start moving toward using preset spots, there is a reduction in accuracy. In addition, explanations of how the method works are hard to understand.

Center to Edge can be a simple method to use; however, it is much harder than it looks. Also, accuracy can be reduced when using preset spots. Those spots are similar to the fractional method, which is covered next.

The CutShots Method can sometimes be called a modified version of the Center to Edge method. It is not; however, as it uses a concept called equal and opposite, which reduces the complexity of understanding how it works.

Fractional Aiming Method

The Fractional Aiming method is one of the primary systems that are used to aim and shot Billiard balls. The fractional system is simple to understand as the ball is just split into fractions. The main version of the method splits the ball into three fractions, ¼, ½, and ¾. Players hit one of the fraction points on the cue ball that correspond with the angle that they need to hit the object ball. In other versions of the method, the cue ball is split into additional fractions so that there are more angles to work with. The downside to the method is that players have to remember all of the fraction points and also know which angle corresponds to each fraction. Also, there only a limited number of angles, so some shots can not be made with full accuracy.

Fractional Pool Aiming System Overview Image
A graphic of how the fractional aiming system works.

Compared to the CutShots Method, the fractional aiming method is more limited in angles and requires players to remember the locations of fraction points, which can be complicated. The same also applies when comparing it to Center to Edge or the Ghost Ball methods.

We of course are behind our new method, the CutShots Method. Please feel free to visit the other pages to learn more about the method.

Aiming pool shots are an important part of the game of pool. You have to make shots, right? There are several techniques that people use to aim shots toward the pocket. The main shot that pool players have to make during the game are cut shots. Cut shots can make up 90 percent of the shots in the game of pool. What is a cut shot? It is when a player needs to make a shot that is to the left or right of the cue ball. You cut the object ball into the pocket by hitting it at an angle or off-center.

To get good at making cut shots, players can use a self-created technique or one of the pool aiming methods. Some players have a self-created technique that they have acquired by practicing the game. They hit the cue ball based on their experience with the movement of the cue ball and the object ball. They can cut the ball based on the estimation of where the object ball will travel if the cue ball is struck in a certain way. Other players use a pool aiming system that follows a set of principals or guidelines. Some of these pool aiming systems include the CutShots Method, the Fractional Aiming method, the Ghost Ball aiming method, and the Center to Edge aiming system.

CutShots Pool Aiming Method

CutShots is a pool aiming system that is focused on helping pool players find the right spots to hit on the object and cue ball for a cut shot. CutShots is one of the easiest ways to aim in pool. It works by first locating the spot that would sink the object ball into the pocket if it was hit straight into the pocket. After locating and remembering that spot, the player moves to the cue ball and then finds the location that mirrors the spot on the object ball. This is the spot at which the cue ball needs to strike the object ball to sink it into the pocket. To not miscue the shot, a player then makes a parallel shift of the cue from the spot to the center of the ball and takes the shot.

To view this in action, take a look at the video below that goes into detail on how it works. The video is made with the CutShots Aim Trainer balls. You can learn more about them here.

Fractional Aiming Method

The fractional aiming method involves visualizing fractional marks on the cue ball. In a simple version of the method, the ball is split into the ¾, ½, and ¼ portions. When a player aims the cue ball to hit the object ball at one of the fractions, the object ball will move in the angle that corresponds with the fraction. The cue ball can also be cut down into smaller fractions to give additional angles. This is a popular method because it uses geometry to explain how the cue ball will hit the object ball.

Fractional aiming can be hard to get accustomed to as it requires that players remember the locations of the fractions and the angle that the ball will travel in response to a fractional hit.

Fractional Pool Aiming System Overview Image
A graphic of how the fractional aiming system works.

Ghost Ball Aiming Method

The Ghost Ball aiming method is one of the most popular pool aiming systems as it is rather simple to understand. The system works by having players place an imaginary pool ball behind the object ball. The ghost ball has to line up with the object ball and the pocket. A player then aims the cue ball toward the ghost ball. The resulting hit will sink the object ball into the pocket as the object ball will be struck at the right angle to move it in the direction of the pocket. To help “see” the ghost ball in a game, a player can point the cue right behind the object ball, in the direction toward the pocket, and then move the cue back and inch or two. That is the position of the ghost ball. The player then pivots the cue toward the cue ball and moves to the cue ball to take the shot. By “striking” the ghost ball, the cue ball will hit the object ball at the position that will move it at the angle that sinks it into the pocket.

The easy steps involved with the ghost ball method make it one of the easier methods to aim in Pool. Aiming toward a ghost ball can be hard, however. It will take some practice to get good at the method. Even those that have mastered the ghost ball method can lose accuracy as a ghost ball is just hard to see.

The Ghost Ball Method Overview for Pool
This is a graphic showcasing how the ghost ball method works.

Center to Edge Aiming System

Center to Edge is an interesting aiming system that can be easy to use; however, is hard to explain. The basis of the system is that the cue is aimed toward the edge of the object ball and is then pivoted to the center to take the shot. When reading more about CTE, you will find that it does get more complicated. For example, the ball is split into three locations where the cue is pointed toward depending on where the edge of the ball is. Other versions of Center to Edge have split the cue ball up into more positions so that it has 5 spots to hit. Players can then take the appropriate shot based on the location of the edge of the object ball. Every time a shot is taken, a player pivots the cue to the center to make the shot. The cue ball will hit the object ball at the right angle to the pocket. On the surface it seems that Center to Edge is simple; however, when getting to know more about the method, it becomes complicated.

Summary

The CutShots, Fractional, Ghost Ball, and Center to Edge (CTE) methods are pool aiming systems that people can use to get accurate at making cut shots in pool. All of them have some drawbacks; however, we believe that our method, the CutShots Method, is the easiest and the most accurate out of all of the systems.

Billiards and Pool Cut Shots

Introduction

Cut shots are an important part of the game of Pool. Pool Cut Shots make up a majority of the shots that need to be made in the game of pool. To be great at Pool or Billiards, a player needs to master cut shots. Billiards Cut Shots are similar to Pool Cut Shots as they are made in the same manner. The name billiards is sometimes used to describe pool; however, the games can use different sizes of balls. In this article, we review some common methods to make cut shots during a game of Billiards or Pool. Those methods include Fractional Ball Aiming, Ghost Ball, and the CutShots Method.

Pool Cut Shot Methods

Fractional Ball Aiming

One of the popular methods to make cut shots is the Fractional Ball Aiming method. This method splits shots into three categories, ¾ hit, ½ hit, and a ¼ hit. A player then hits the object ball with one of the selected fractions and the object ball will then move at a certain percentage angle based on the fractional hit. A ¼ inch hit will give a larger angle than a ¾ hit. Based on the angle that is needed to sink the object ball, a player selects one of the fractions to match with the angle.

The Fractional Ball cut shot method can be good for players to use because there are only three fractions to remember. The downside to the method is that there are only three ways to hit the object ball, which gives players limited options and less accuracy. There are additional fractions that can be added to the method to give more options; however, it is difficult to “see” those fractions as they are small.

Fractional Pool Aiming System Overview Image

Ghost Ball Method

The Ghost Ball method is a very popular cut shot method that involves players visualizing a ghost object ball behind the main object ball. The method is very simple to use, which makes it popular among players.

A player has to imagine that there is a pool ball behind the object ball and then focus on hitting the ghost ball in the center. By hitting the ghost or imaginary pool ball in the center, the cue ball will hit the real object ball at the correct angle to pocket it. The ghost ball must be placed right behind the ball in the direction that is pointing to the pocket. To help visualize this on a pool table, a player can take the cue and point it in the direction that would sink the object ball. The player then moves back 2 inches and then pivots the cue so that it lines up with the cue ball. Next, the cue is moved back to the cue ball and the player then takes the shot at that angle. The object ball will now enter the pocket as a result of the angle that it was hit at.

Limitations of the Ghost Ball method include the use of an invisible ball, which makes it hard to visually see exactly where the cue ball needs to hit the object ball. By having to pretend that there is a ball behind the object ball, errors can easily be made. If a player does not line up the cue exactly in the direction of the ghost ball, the object ball will not go into the pocket.

The Ghost Ball Method Overview for Pool

CutShots Method

To make Pool aiming more simple, CutShots has developed a method using a concept called equal and opposite. The CutShots Aiming System uses a specially designed object ball and cue ball, with multi-colored shapes, to help players visualize the exact spots that they need to hit on both of the balls.
Players start by locating the spot that would sink the object ball into the pocket if it were to be hit directly with the cue. After finding that spot, players remember the location by using the shapes as a reference to locate the spot. Moving to the cue ball, a player then finds the point that is the same distance from the edge, on the opposite side, as the spot on the object ball (when viewing from the cue ball). Next, the player moves the cue from that position to the center of the cue ball and then takes the shot. The result is that the cue ball will strike the object ball at the correct position, and it will enter the pocket.

By practicing with CutShots, players will gain visual and muscle memory that will allow them to know where to hit the object and cue ball to sink the shot. A person could use the CutShots method without the training balls to sink cut shots. All a player has to do is to remember the locations without the visual aid of the shapes on the CutShots ball.

The downside to the CutShots method is that if you do not hit the cue ball in the right spot, the object ball will not go into the pocket.

You can learn more about the CutShots method on this page.

CutShots Pool Aiming Method Overview

Overview

Fractional and Ghost Ball aiming systems are the two main methods that people use to make Pool and Billiards cut shots. The CutShots Method is a new and easy method that allows players to use the concept of equal and opposite. The Fractional and Ghost Ball aiming systems are common methods that people use to make cut shots. The fractional system will allow you to know the angle that the ball is going to take; however, being fixed to certain fractions of the ball give it some limitations. The Ghost Ball method is great as you can just aim toward an imaginary ball that is directly behind the object ball. The limitation with that method is that you have to aim toward a ball that is not there, which can be hard to do. The CutShots Method is rather easy to use as a player can locate the exact locations where the ball needs to hit.
